        <![CDATA[<p>Associate Professor Triona Mc Caffrey, joint winner of the Presidents Research Excellence and Impact Early Career Researcher – Starting Award 2025</p><p><br></p><p>In this episode we hear from Triona Mc Caffrey, Associate Professor of music therapy, at the Irish world academy of music and dance, a member of the Participatory Health research Unit, and the Health Research Institute here at the University of Limerick. We discuss Triona’s research primarily focused on music, and music therapy for mental wellbeing, with a specific focus on adult and perinatal mental health. Triona has spearheaded interdisciplinary research across Music Therapy, midwifery, psychiatry, and obstetrics with a strong emphasis on Public and Patient Involvement (PPI). </p><p><br></p><p>Triona is joined by Maria Gibbons, Advanced Midwife Practitioner, with the Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Team, at the University Maternity Hospital Limerick. Triona’s pioneering collaborations with University Maternity Hospital Limerick has led to the first music therapy programme in specialist perinatal, mental health services in Ireland, this programme has been commended by the Department of Health. Karen discusses her research, which is driven by the goal of transforming care for people with musculoskeletal pain, particularly shoulder pain and chronic pain, by advancing effective, non-surgical treatment options. This work has provided new insights into the mechanisms and treatment of shoulder pain, along with deeper insights into the lived experiences of people with pain. <br><br></p><p>Karen is joined by Martina Phelan, Chairperson of Chronic Pain Ireland and Ryan Meaney, Physical Activity for Health Officer, Limerick Sports Partnership who are collaborators on Karen’s most recent research project: The “Community Based exercise for chronic pain” COM EX. Professor James Green, PAfH core member, School of Allied Health, Faculty of Education and Health Sciences, UL are joined by Michael Barry and Micheal Lynch, both who live locally and have been long time attendees of a community-based exercise programme for people living with a chronic condition run in UL.  This programme, named ULMedX,  was designed and is run by the Physical Activity for Health Research Centre. Her research is an important scholarly contribution to the growing evidence that engaging with the arts positively impacts health. Daragh is Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology and a member UL’s Centre for Social Issues-research. Daragh’s research specialises in the application of theory and method to address real-world issues. Focusing on the creation of ambitious applied projects increasing our theoretical understanding and achieving maximum impact for those most in need. Applying the Social Identity Model of Identity and Organisational Change in an applied setting addressing social and psychological outcomes. This research is conducted across a variety of community settings with demonstrable theoretical and applied impact such as stakeholder engagement, peer-reviewed publications, international awards, competitive funding, and through the application of his work in developing community supports.         <![CDATA[<p>Up to 45% of us will get knee osteoarthritis in our lifetime, yet it is often not prioritised, people with joint disease are being under-served in terms of delivery of evidence-based rehabilitation in the form of exercise and education, particularly for hip and knee osteoarthritis. Evidence suggests that exercise and education is very effective for people with osteoarthritis but often patients feel like they are directed more towards medications and surgical opinions, sometimes due to lack of available services. The GLA:D programme is a group-based programme that aims to aid these patients and improve their general health through exercise and education.</p><p> </p><p>Dr. Clodagh Toomey, Research Fellow, at the School of Allied Health, Faculty of Education and Health Sciences and winner of the Presidents Excellence and Impact Early Career Researcher – Starting Award 2023 discusses her research and her group’s implementation of the GLAS:D programme with collaborators, Ian Dowling, a Chartered Physiotherapist working in private practice from his clinic based in Raheen, Limerick, Ian retired from professional rugby after suffering a hip injury while playing for Munster.         <![CDATA[The personal, societal and economic costs of low back pain are enormous, and the likelihood of being disabled by back pain has worsened in recent decades. Prof Helena Lenihan, Chair of the UL Research Impact Committee is joined by Dr Kieran O’Sullivan, Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy, School of Allied Health and winner of the President’s Research Excellence and Impact Early Career Award. Dr O’Sullivan’s research has shed new light on why back pain is such an ongoing challenge and the tendency for back pain to be treated as an almost entirely ‘physical’ issue – where we rely too much on tests such as MRI scans, at the expense of treating the whole human. His research has led to the development and testing of novel solutions for the treatment of back pain.]]>

Cala Medical have designed and patented a unique device containing a specific immobilized enzyme which treats the excessive inflammatory response in the blood of sepsis patients. The treatment could dramatically cut the death rate from sepsis which is a highly prevalent and often fatal illness requiring intensive medical care. Ultimately, a large number of victims in Ireland are not engaging in the criminal justice system. Prof Shane Kilcommins, Dr Susan Leahy &amp; Dr Eimear Spain from the Centre for Crime, Justice and Victim Studies (CCJVS) and the School of Law have sought to better understand this phenomenon with a view to understanding how best to engage with and support victims of crime, while also informing public policy and legislative reform. By focusing their research on the place of victims within the criminal justice system, the team is giving a voice to underrepresented minorities including victims with disabilities.       <title>Nutrition supports for age related muscle mass loss</title>
      <description>
        <![CDATA[In Ireland, only 30% of women and 45% of men over 65 remain disability-free for life. Dramatic changes in cells start in our 30s, while in our 40s, health and functionality are impacted by increasing weight gain, decreasing bone density and loss or weakening of muscle. People with low lean tissue or muscle mass are classified as sarcopenic. Conservative estimates predict that the incidence of sarcopenia will increase by 50% over the next 30 years, making it a major public health issue among Ireland’s increasing older population. Prof Phil Jakeman and Dr Catherine Norton discuss their research which has proven that that sarcopenia can be offset by modifications to dietary habits. Their research shows that optimising the quality and timing of protein intake decreases age-related loss of muscle mass and in turn can benefit the quality of life of those who are affected by sarcopenia.<br><br>Recorded by GK Media Ltd.]]>

        <![CDATA[Low levels of physical activity are attributed to 6-10% of coronary heart disease, type 2  diabetes, breast and colon cancer and over 20% risk of Alzheimer’s disease in Europe. In their research Prof Alan Donnelly &amp; Dr Ciaran Mac Donncha seek to objectively measure  the health risk behaviours of physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour (time sitting, lying down) and also understand the impact on health and why individuals make these behaviour choices.
